From Kickstarter Camera Gadgets to Global Outdoor Gear: The Story of Peak Design
How a single road trip sparked a design revolution - and what’s next for UK retailers.
When the founder of Peak Design, Peter Dering, returned from a four-month trip in 2010, he had a revelation: lugging a high-end camera was a pain. Determined to change things, he quit his job and spent ten months designing a compact, intelligent “Capture” device to make camera carry effortless. He launched on Kickstarter, bypassing venture capital and staying true to his vision. In doing so, Peak Design established a foundation: “we make the products we want to make and run the company we want to run.”

That investor-free mindset has powered Peak Design ever since. The company didn’t just stop at camera accessories - it expanded into travel, everyday carry, and outdoor gear, all while maintaining its creative independence and user-first design philosophy. Their mission isn’t derived from leadership books or executive frameworks, it’s simply how they've always done things. They pride themselves on inclusive, diverse design cultures, and a team where “everyone has a voice and feels free to bring their unique selves to the table.”
Today, Peak Design’s product range is a destination for design-savvy travellers, outdoor adventurers, and creative professionals alike. The new outdoor bag category is a natural evolution: rooted in the brand’s authenticity, made with the same attention to function, form and sustainability. And now, through our partnership at Heartbreaker LTD, we’re proud to bring this story - and these products - to the UK market.
As we partner up, we’re not just distributing bags. We’re joining a movement - one where design meets purpose, and where retailers have the opportunity to offer something exceptional. The future? Expect bold colour-way strategies, a wider category mix (including the much-anticipated commuter line), and a UK-retail rollout built around meaningful, long-term growth. Stay tuned for what’s next.
